Why it's a good idea to manage your own brainwave frequencies
Did you know that the frequency of your brainwaves changes throughout the day and night and that you can learn to manage these consciously?
Generally speaking, our brainwaves respond to our activities but it is possible to use simple practices to stimulate the brainwaves of our choice. This can be done through grounding, mindfulness and breathing techniques as well as with sound. You can learn more in our “Certificate III in Personal Empowerment”. In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the brainwave frequencies that we experience.
BETA (above 14-30 Hz)
Beta is the fastest brain rhythm level and is dominant in most adult awake states. At this level the mind focuses on the physical dimension – the five physical senses: time, space, logic, belief, reason and concrete ideas and objects. It is the state we operate in when we are listening and thinking, analysing and problem solving, processing information about the world around us, making decisions and judgements. At the lower end of Beta, we can experience alertness, focus and motivation. Hypervigilance, anxiety and agitation are indicators that someone is at the high end of Beta.
ALPHA (9-13 Hz)
During Alpha state frequencies, the mind is focused on the inner awareness where intuition, inspiration and creativity flourish and the mind is free from the worries and frustrations of the physical world. The average adult operates in this range only in rare, fleeting moments of deep thought and relaxation.
Alpha frequencies promote a tranquil ‘flow’ state, serotonin release, mental resourcefulness, and it enhances an overall sense of relaxation. In this state we can move quickly and efficiently to accomplish whatever task is at hand. When Alpha is dominant most people feel at ease and calm.
THETA (4-8 Hz)
Theta frequencies often cause people to fall asleep as it is classed as “slow” activity. Theta is connected with daydreaming and fantasizing and it is also a repository for memories, emotions and sensations. Theta waves are strong during meditation, prayer, mindfulness and spiritual awareness. It reflects the state between wakefulness and sleep that allows access to the subconscious mind. Healing occurs naturally in the peaceful Theta state.
